Santa Maria del Mar, Barcelona Vertorama After inhaling the book of Ildefonso Falcones "La catedral del mar" I had to visit this church. I left my family at the beach in Salou to visit Barcelona and search for this impressive piece of architecture. I was there in the morning hours and so I was nearly alone and the silence of the emptyness woke up the feelings I had while enjoying the story of the book. Big time recommendation!! If you wonder why this photo looks strange because of the curved lines, it is a Vertorama. This technique makes it possible to pack big buildings into one photo and print it big to revive the feeling of being small. Cheers!! Santa Maria del Mar, ("Saint Mary of the Sea") is an imposing church in the Ribera district of Barcelona, Spain, built between 1329 and 1383 at the height of Catalonia's maritime and mercantile preeminence. It is an outstanding example of Catalan Gothic, with a purity and unity of style that is very unusual in large medieval buildings.
